PrimalX OtherWorldly Photography is a recently completed redesign project of epic proportions.
This website belongs to a prolific photographer, who also happens to be my best friend Jessica Black. PrimalX has been online for over 16 years, and holds over 8,000 images in 120+ galleries.
When the original hard coded HTML website was loaded into WordPress in 2003, there weren’t a lot of photography focused themes. Most were geared towards blogging, and over time many theme developers went dark – abandoning their themes and the people who used them.
One thing about WordPress is that it requires regular maintenance. When a theme stops being updated, at some point the entire website will have problems. Unfortunately, this is what happened to PrimalX.
The theme chosen in 2003 was no longer supported, and installation of any updates to the site would often break everything. This was the main reason PrimalX needed a complete overhaul – because of an abandoned theme.
With the redesign Envira Gallery was implemented, replacing NextGen Gallery as the image handler. Converting all those NextGen galleries to Envira was a snap with the NextGen Importer plugin. We highly recommend Envira Gallery for all its features and ease of use.
In the redesign we chose to keep a dark theme to highlight Jessica’s photography. Images are showcased in tiled albums and galleries. A lightbox opens gallery images to viewers without having to leave the page. Social Sharing buttons in lightbox view make it easy for people to share photos on their social media accounts.
To speed things up with all that media, WP Super Cache was installed and configured. And to take it a step further, a CDN was also implemented in the redesign.
And if that wasn’t enough, we also designed new business cards, Facebook covers, Twitter covers, site icon, and Social Media icons for Jessica to complement the new website design.
This project is one of the biggest we’ve completed. It was no easy feat getting here, but we’re very proud of the results.
